UTI: Here’s what you can do to prevent it

Having the frequent need to pee? Or that burning sensation while urinating? If you are feeling both of these symptoms, perhaps you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). According to Mayoclinic, UTI is an infection in any part of your urinary system—your kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

UTI is seen mostly in women, while the reason behind is not completely understood, experts do know that the way a woman’s body is put together creates a perfect setup for bacteria to enter the urinary tract.

Thankfully, UTIs are very easily treated by antibiotics, but what do you do if you are someone who wants to be proactive?

Here are some basic ways that can help you put UTI at bay.

  • Drink plenty of water

Drinking water helps dilute your urine and ensures that you’ll urinate more frequently — allowing bacteria to be flushed from your urinary tract before an infection can begin.

  • Urinate frequently

Don’t hold it in. Flush out the bacteria out of your urinary tract.

  • Wipe from front to back

This helps prevent bacteria in the anal region from spreading to the vagina and urethra.

  • Try avoid or limit consumption of food that irritate the bladder

This includes sugar, processed and pre-packaged ready-made items, caffeine, alcohol, dairy products, red meat and other animal protein, fish, lots of corn, wheat, and potatoes.

  • Urinate promptly before and after intercourse

This may help flush out bacteria that may have been introduced during intercourse. Wash the genital area with warm water before having sex.

  • Avoid tight-fitting clothing

Wear cotton garments for maximum breathability.

  • Observe your pee

Your urine can tell so much about what’s going on inside your bladder—its clarity and color variety. So, pay close attention to your pee.

Once you are feeling something different, don’t hesitate to tell. Seek your doctor’s care instantly.
